No pain no gain

Saw Paul Potts first appearance on Britain's Got Talent show on youtube for the first time last night. What an impressive performance! You can see for yourself here:

Read on the internet that after winning the BGT competition, he was being criticized for not disclosing that he has received formal training including a performance in front of Pavarotti and touring with some opera shows. Certainly, part of Potts appeal is the story of a mobile phone salesman being able to sing great opera. It does warm one's heart and bring tears to one's eye. But I have no idea why people would criticize him for having received training or have performed without being paid. How could anyone become good at what they are doing without training or practice? There are many people with special talent and being talented doesn't mean you can suddenly sing great opera. Talent will need to be developped and polished just like any raw diamond. Anyone expecting talent to shine through without effort is simply deluded. As the old adage goes, "no pain no gain"!
